Research:Dyer's star theory

                                                 Dyer's star theory

The term star can have the meaning of constructed around music performers in order to sell the performer to a large and loyal audience. There are series of meanings  constructed around performance and music to promote the  star to a large audience.

Richard Dyer is an English academic, who is a professor of film in king college London. What Dyer suggestions include:

  • '' Star image is coherent that it is incomplete and open''.
  • ''The star must be simultaneously be ordinary and extraordinary for the consumer''.
  • '' The star must be simultaneously present and absent for the audience the consumer''.
Difference between performer and pop-star

Star performer.Image constructed  to an audience.
Pop star: May/may  not be famous, just perform music.
Pop performers are described as pop stars. promoted to this status by their management.A true pop star does have a lasting significance and brand awareness amongst  a wider marker over period of time.

Four element recognisng a star

  • Star and construction
A star need to a unique selling point, if  a star doesn't have one, it have to be made for them which is called artificial image.Example of  this artificial image creation is shown in shows such as X-factor. where the show looks for the star and  they look for people that  they can  make into  stars and brand them.

 Industry audience

Star are manufactured to making money  pop stars are the product of their record company and they  must be sold. There are always someone fresh to choose from.Another way is to produce a star with long lasting appeal, who once can brand and establish, can cater to a fan audience for decades. synergy is a way in which  the artist could be promoted. different formats could be used and interacted with to gain a larger reaction from the public. For example Beyonce  as she released her new perfume brand ' Heat by Beyonce' which can enhance her popularity with the audience which also contribute to her success.

Ideology and culture

Artist need to have their own moral values and cultural values and promote their point of views. Also the artist need to be popular on social media sites in order to establish their own music.Audience are interests in these values which enhances their 'stair quality ' and create a star  persona, expressing political ideologies such as Michael George 'Shoot the dog '

Character and Personality
The star can provide audiences with the focus for their ideas of what people are supposed to be like.
Example Adele- being overweight and still lovable, as physically she is not a role model or a perfect weight but she is lovable because of her singing and her personality.

Conclusion: Dyer's theory is a significant  theory in outlining the important of star image of an artist. In my music video i would mainly focus on the ideology and culture element of Dyer's  star  theory. This will carry star  in  a more clear way and the viewers could have more  of a  insight  in he / she personality and beliefs  of the star.

  1. Good. Dyer's theory mainly understood at times and examples of artists to represent his theory are drawn upon. Also, how you plan to use this theory within your own artist.

    To improve;
-what does Dyer mean by each quote? Explore these
-pop 'star' and 'performer' needs to be revisited. Definitions here are not clear.
-what types of ideologies and culture will you promote within your artist?
